  1. There is evidence in New Brunswick of human habitation going back 9000 years.
  2. New Brunswick was first inhabited by the Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, and Passamaquoddy when the Europeans first arrived.
  3. The rocks that make up New Brunswick and the other Maritime provinces originate in microcontinents that once lay near the South Pole.
  4. In the early 1700s, the settlements in New Brunswick became a part of Acadia (also known as Acadie), an official colony of New France, different from that of the district of Quebec in the Canada colony.
  5. The University of New Brunswick is tied with the University of Georgia as being the oldest university in North America.
  6. The New Brunswick Museum in Saint John is Canada’s first museum, established in 1842.
  7. French explorer Jacques Cartier was the first European to see New Brunswick in 1534.
  8. The first French settlement in North America was attempted in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, near St. Andrews.
  9. In 1604, French Samuel de Champlain reached the mouth of the Saint John River (modern site of the city of Saint John).
  10. Saint John was later the site of the first European settlement in New Brunswick, followed by Fredericton upriver.

  16. In 1783, the first newspaper was published in New Brunswick.
