  1. There is evidence in New Brunswick of human habitation going back 9000 years.
  2. New Brunswick was first inhabited by the Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, and Passamaquoddy when the Europeans first arrived.
  3. The rocks that make up New Brunswick and the other Maritime provinces originate in microcontinents that once lay near the South Pole.
  4. In the early 1700s, the settlements in New Brunswick became a part of Acadia (also known as Acadie), an official colony of New France, different from that of the district of Quebec in the Canada colony.
  5. The University of New Brunswick is tied with the University of Georgia as being the oldest university in North America.
  6. The New Brunswick Museum in Saint John is Canada’s first museum, established in 1842.
  7. French explorer Jacques Cartier was the first European to see New Brunswick in 1534.
  8. The first French settlement in North America was attempted in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, near St. Andrews.
  9. In 1604, French Samuel de Champlain reached the mouth of the Saint John River (modern site of the city of Saint John).
  10. Saint John was later the site of the first European settlement in New Brunswick, followed by Fredericton upriver.
  11. In 1713, the British took over Acadia during Queen Anne’s War.
  12. The French continued to dispute the area, building Fort Beausejour in 1751. Today, Fort Beausejour is a National Historic Site in New Brunswick, near the border with Nova Scotia.
  13. In 1755, the British took over the fort and began expelling the Acadians, mostly to Louisiana. Known as the “Great Expulsion”, around 11,500 of 14,100 Acadians were forcefully deported, with around 5000 of them dying.
  14. Some Acadians later returned to find English, mostly from New England, occupying the homes and lands, so they formed new communities.
  15. After the Treaty of Paris (1763), the area of New Brunswick became a part of the British colony of Nova Scotia.

  16. In 1783, the first newspaper was published in New Brunswick.
  17. After the American Revolution (1775 – 1783), around 10,000 Loyalists fled the US and settled in New Brunswick. Most English-speaking New Brunswickers today are descended from them.
  18. In 1784, New Brunswick became its own district separate from Nova Scotia.
  19. In 1785, Saint John became Canada’s first incorporated city (not to be confused with Saint John’s, Newfoundland).

  26. Irving Oil Limited was established in Bouctouche in 1924. In 1977, it became the first Canadian oil company to offer unleaded gasoline at its retail outlets. In the late 1990s, it became the first oil company in Canada and one of the first in North America to offer gasoline with very low sulfur content. Irving has also been instrumental in partnering with the New England Aquarium in the protection of the rare Atlantic right whale by changing its shipping lanes to avoid collisions in the Bay of Fundy.
  27. McCain Foods Limited, established in Florenceville in 1957, is one of the largest manufacturers of frozen French fries and potato specialties.
  28. In 1957, equalization payments began, with better-off provinces giving part of the taxation income to provinces such as New Brunswick.
  29. In 1960, Louis J. Robichaud became the first Acadian premier of New Brunswick.
  30. In 1969, New Brunswick became officially bilingual. Residents can now choose to receive government services and correspondences in either English or French. This right became a part of the Canadian Constitution in 1982.
