Published

on

New Brunswick didn’t suddenly grow from the ground as the flourishing province it is today. It has a long history, making it into what you see today. However, New Brunswick’s history is as fascinating as ever, especially for the history buffs. New Brunswick also has its share of spooky stories to tell. And, of course, where there’s smoke, there’s fire, which means there’s an origin to the spooky New Brunswick stories you’ve heard about.

Here are 13 of New Brunswick’s most haunted places ever worth visiting and all the more worth reading over.

O’Donaghue’s Irish Pub, Miramichi

O’Donaghue’s Irish Pub can be found inside a 200-year-old building that sits near the banks of the Miramichi River. It being 200 years old says a lot already, and it has some rich history behind it. However, after the pub has closed for the day, the strange shadows living in the building’s basement come alive. Lights switched on and off, loud noises, audible footsteps, and even a ghostly apparition that loves to appear in the windows long after closing time have been reportedly seen by the locals frequenting the area. The place is a must-visit.

Capitol Theatre, Moncton

The Capitol Theatre in Moncton is one of its most iconic buildings. Moncton wouldn’t be the place it is today without the Capitol Theatre. The place wasn’t originally haunted until the fateful year of 1924. A firefighter named Alexander “Sandy” Lindsay was killed when the main stage collapsed onto him while he was putting off a fire. Since then, it is said that Sandy has been frequenting the theatre, waiting for the next show to begin. Sandy can always be seated in the auditorium, blowing a cold wind through the theatre.

St. Andrew’s Gaol

The Case of the Haunted Jail | St. Andrew's Gaol | Tom Hutchings

Source: https://view902.com/the-case-of-the-haunted-jail/

St. Andrew’s Gaol (jail) was built in 1840. It became the home for an Englishman named Tom Roland Hutchings. He was a Royal Air Force member who suddenly murdered a young woman named Bernice Connors after a dance in Black’s Harbour.

After being convicted of murder, Tom was sentenced to death in 1942. Quebec’s official hangman was brought in to do the job, but the hanging didn’t go as smoothly as planned. Instead, Tom Roland Hutchings had to go through 12 awful minutes before finally dying. Tom is believed to haunt the jail, and the people who visit his jail cell reportedly feel cold pressure around their throats, as if they were being hanged.

Kouchibouguac National Park

The tranquil and picturesque park turns into a place you would never want to pass by at night. Are there werewolves in the park? Nobody knows. Coyotes go around the place, but many people doubt that coyotes do the nightly howling. People who went to the park during the nighttime hear rustling in the woods and spine-chilling howling sounds that will make you run for your life.

St. Michael’s Basilica, Miramichi

Saint Michael's Basilica | Ghostly apparition | Disembodied nun

As beautiful as this grand church in Miramichi looks, locals have reported it also serves as home to several ghosts. One of the most famous ghosts living in the basilica is the ghost of a little girl in the basement bathroom who disappears when you look in the mirror. Additionally, other locals have also heard sounds of children laughing in the church’s basement gym. If that’s not enough, St. Michael’s Basilica has a legend saying you’ll hear a disembodied nun’s screaming voice throughout the building.

Boyce Mansion, Fredericton

Boyce Mansion | Ghost of a mother

Source: https://tj.news/telegraph-journal/101995416

The beautiful Victorian home sitting on Fredericton’s Waterloo Row once served as an off-campus residence for the students of the University of Brunswick. The beautiful home had an unwelcome visitor who fondly took care of the boys in the once-university residence as they slept.

Boyce Mansion’s female apparition did nothing spine-chilling like screaming in the hallways or making her footsteps heard. Instead, the gentle ghost would tousle the male students’ hair as they slept and tuck them in, allowing them to wake up to a warm morning with their blankets securely wrapped around their shoulders. At times, this ghost will even soothingly tell the boys to gently go to sleep.

While that may sound relaxing and loving, one resident decided to stay up all night to talk to the spirit. As he waited patiently, albeit drowsily, for the apparition, his attempt succeeded when a brush of cold fingers was felt on his face. Upon his shock, he asked the spirit who it was, and the spirit responded, “I am waiting for my letter.”

It turns out that the ghostly apparition was that of a mother who once lived in Boyce Mansion. The mother wrote regular letters to her son, who suddenly fell ill. The son wrote the mother a letter, wanting to inform her of his illness, but the letter never came, and the son succumbed to his illness. When the mother discovered his son’s demise, she soon became inconsolable and died. Her spirit never left Boyce Mansion and, up to now, is still waiting for the arrival of her son’s letter.

Grey Island Cemetery, Hillsborough

In Hillsborough’s Grey Island Cemetery is a statue in the likeness of the woman whose name is on the grave below. The woman was murdered, and her heartbroken husband used to spend hours by the side of the statue, having a conversation with it.

The husband’s body was found by the statue when he lost his life, and after that, it was rumored that if you walked around the statue three times and stood with your back to it, the statue would reach out and tap your shoulder. So many people have attested to it happening that the Grey Island Cemetery decided to remove the statue’s hand.

The Algonquin Hotel, St. Andrews

St. Andrews’ historic Algonquin Hotel has gathered guests from all over the world. Because of its beauty, some have decided not to leave at all. One of the famous ghosts in Algonquin was the ghost of a bride who was abandoned at the altar. She stayed in room 473 in the Algonquin Hotel’s long-closed tower.

Even though the tower was closed off for years, staff and civilians have noticed that lights sometimes come on in the tower, and a shadow of the woman dressed in white can be seen looking out of the window. The paranormal activities are so famous in the Algonquin Hotel that you can even join a special ghost tour.

The Dungarvon Whooper, Blackville

The Dungarvon Whooper | Ryan the Cook

The Dungarvon River might contain boundless pristine beauty during the daytime, but a horrifying howl can be heard during the nighttime. Legend has it that an Irishman named Ryan, who was working in one of the lumber camps in the 1800s, was ruthlessly murdered by one of the loggers because of the money belt he carries.

In the nights that followed, a loud whooping noise of a murdered man’s rage can be heard throughout the lumber camps. The loggers abandoned the lumber camps because of the terrifying howl, never to come back again. It is said that if you go by the area during nighttime, you will still be able to hear Ryan’s howl along the banks of the Dungarvon.

French Fort Cove, Miramichi

Source: https://delrayengineering.ca/index.php/our-projects/miscellaneous-projects/

Miramichi’s French Fort Cove is one of the top vacation destinations and one of the most beautiful places in New Brunswick. However, it is home to the Headless Nun. The story of the Headless Nun starts when Sister Marie Inconnue starts protecting a treasure from pirates in the mid-1700s. In Sister Marie’s refusal to give up the original location of the treasure, the pirates ruthlessly beheaded her.

In the centuries following Sister Marie Inconnue’s death, Miramichiers have reported seeing a ghostly headless shadow in the French Fort Cove, searching in vain for the whereabouts of her head.

Centracare, Saint John

Provincial Lunatic Asylum | Wolastoq Park

Source: https://mynewbrunswick.ca/provincial-lunatic-asylum/

Today’s Centracare in Saint John was once called the “Provincial Lunatic Asylum.” The asylum stood for a century and a half before being demolished in 1999, making way for Wolastoq Park, a peaceful park that’s picturesque at the same time.

However, park-goers often report that they hear sounds of crying babies and disembodied voices around the otherwise peaceful park. The people who frequent the park or stroll around the area often say that they feel people watching them and see strange lights. It’s no wonder the location where once an asylum stood became home to numerous restless spirits that continue roaming the area.

The story of the Fire Ship of the Bay of Chaleur started many centuries ago when a pirate named Craig visited a First Nations community and attempted to kidnap two young women. A First Nations man helping pilot the ship out of the area helped the two young women escape.

The two young women warned that a terrible misfortune would befall the ship. True enough, the ship broke apart on the rocks as a terrible wave welcomed them. All of the crew, including Craig, died by drowning. That night, a huge fireball in the form of a ship suddenly appeared. Today, thousands of people have claimed to have seen the Fire Ship of the Bay of Chaleur.

Rebecca Lutes’ Grave, Moncton

Rebecca Lutes | Withcraft | Unusual occurences

Source: https://huddle.today/2016/10/28/new-brunswicks-7-haunted-places/

Rebecca Lutes is one of Moncton’s famed ghost stories. Rebecca Lutes was only 16 when she discovered she could see what would happen. In 1876, she was charged with witchcraft and was hung on a huge poplar tree branch.

Rebecca Lutes was buried upside down, and her grave was covered in concrete to prevent her from digging up in case of her resurrection. Since then, her grave has become a spot for occult rituals, and some people around the area have claimed to see unusual occurrences such as strange lights, mysterious fires, and even an unusually ghostly cat coming from her grave.

Are New Brunswick’s spooky stories spooky enough for you? These are also one reason why tourists frequent this beautiful Canadian province. See it for yourself and experience the spine-chilling stories firsthand.
